The History of the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry

"A Footnote In History..."
When you think about Wisconsin's involvement in the War of the Rebellion, the first thing that comes to minds for many is the famed "Iron Brigade". Unfortunately, so much focus has been placed upon the brigade who "stood like iron" in the face of the enemy, that many never stop to consider the other 51 volunteer infantry regiments that were formed in the Badger State during the war.

Governor Alexander W. Randall, when confronted by the duty of organizing troops for active service, sorely felt the need of men of military experience. Someone called his attention to the record of Capt. Charles S. Hamilton in the Mexican war. Randall at once sent for Hamilton, besought his assistance, and on the 11th of May, 1861, commissioned him as aide upon the governor’s staff to superintend the rendezvous, organization and fitting for the field of troops to be sent under the president’s call. The very training camp (Camp Randall) used by the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiments, who comprised 3/5ths of the Iron Brigade, was organized by the man who would later become the colonel of the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry served with distinction throughout the war, yet received very little press and fanfare. The regiment served both in the east, with the Army of the Potomac, and later it served in the west under Gen. William T. Sherman — participating in nearly every major battle of the war. But when their service had ended in 1865, they returned to Madison, WI with very little ceremony and quietly passed back into civilian life without a mutter.

This site is dedicated to the memory of those men and the remarkable things they did. As you visit each section, we are confident that you will discover that this regiment was far from typical and that it could be honestly heralded as one of the finest infantry regiments in Wisconsin history. The men who served with this regiment certainly deserve to be much more than a footnote in history — and this web site will do its best to ensure that their story is told to everyone.
